TL;DR

  • Meta spent $0.00 on 24 October. The $200 test stays closed: 17,319 views, 364 link clicks, 55 cents a click.
  • Halfsies 1.3.2 shows an ad after every run. On iPhone, that ad could leave the game silent, or make it play through the silent switch.
  • Version 1.3.3 fixes the sound and adds landscape screens for folding phones, iPads and wide phones.
  • 1.3.3 replaced 1.3.2 in Google's Android review on 24 October. Google has not approved it yet.

Halfsies 1.3.2 put an ad after every run. That ad was quietly breaking the sound. Version 1.3.3 fixes it, and it is now the Android build Google is reviewing.

The ad account, day five of nothing

We read every ad in Ads Manager for 24 October. All six showed $0.00. The campaign hit its $200 cap on 19 October and the last cents went out on 21 October.

Spend per day from 11 to 24 October: about $20 a day for the broad US audience, $19 to $34 a day for gamers, then cents on 20 and 21 October and $0.00 from 22 to 24 October

Our pause rule needs at least $5 of new spend before it judges an ad, so nothing was paused and nothing was edited. The totals below are the same as in diary #6.

The bug the ads made

Halfsies earns money by showing a short ad between runs. Version 1.3.2, live on the App Store since 22 October, put one after every run. That is when the sound started going wrong.

The game told iPhone to treat it like a music app: play even with the silent switch on, and stop whatever else was playing. Google's ad code then changed that setting while each ad ran and never changed it back. After an ad, the game was either silent or ignoring the silent switch, depending on the phone.

What 1.3.3 changes. In 1.3.2 the sound could go silent after an ad or play through the silent switch, your own music stopped, and big screens were portrait only. In 1.3.3 the sound comes back after every ad and respects the silent switch, your music keeps playing, and Folds, iPads and wide phones get landscape
What 1.3.3 changes.

Version 1.3.3 sets the game up as background-style sound. The silent switch wins, your own music keeps playing, and the game turns its sound back on after every ad. Joseph wrote up how the fix works.

Landscape for big screens

The same build adds a landscape layout. Folding phones, iPads and wide phones no longer get a tall phone screen stretched across the middle.

Four test screens from the 1.3.3 build in landscape: the menu with today's three objects, a cut on a gold six-shooter, the scale showing a 41.4 score, and the daily stamp results card

Android: 1.3.3 takes the slot

On 24 October, 1.3.3 replaced 1.3.2 as the Android build in Google's review, so Android starts with the fixed sound. The release still asks for a full rollout in 177 countries and regions plus the rest of the world. Until Google approves it, Halfsies is not on Google Play for the public.

Google Play Console on 25 October: production release 1.3.3 (53) in review, start full rollout, add 177 countries and regions, add rest of world, and the closed test also on 1.3.3
